At the annual captains meeting for the Three Shires League, the draw was made for the first round of the league cup. Luton Boaters were drawn at home against the Armadillos, Arlesey, while the Plaiters will travel to the Orange Tree in Baldock. The matches will be played in the week beginning 4th May, so the Boaters home game will be on Thursday 7th. The Orange Tree usually play home games on a Monday, but as that will be a Bank Holiday, it may be played on the Thursday instead.
For 2015 we have decided to rename our two teams playing in the Three Shires League to celebrate the town's connection with the hat making industry. "Luton Plaiters" and "Luton Boaters" will play home matches on Thursday evenings. The club also has a team in another local league, the Pennant Midweek League. Commenting on the change of name, club Chair, Sherrin Everitt said "petanque is a competitive game, but also one of its great attractions is the friendly and informal atmosphere at matches and competitions. We feel that changing the teams names from Luton A and Luton B to the Plaiters and the Boaters will do away with any sense of hierarchy between the teams, and also help remind us of our connection to this area." As well as regular league matches during the summer, the club has informal practice and social sessions at its venue adjacent to Stopsley High School. Anyone is welcome to come along on Sundays at 11.30 am, and Tuesdays at 1.00 pm. One of the beauties of the game of petanque is its accessibility. Not only can people of all ages and genders play together, it can also be played by people with a range of disabilities. For instance, the rules of the game specify how a player should position their wheelchair.
At Luton Petanque Club, we have tried to ensure that our facilities are accesible. We welcome players of all ages and abilities. But we also know that we probably haven;t thought of everything, so we would welcome any comments or criticisms you might have. You can find our contact details on our "get in touch" page here. Or visit our Facebook page here. Every month from May to September we will be holding a "just for fun" competition. The format will be a melee. Everyone will play three games, each with different randomly allocated team mates. All are welcome, whether a seasoned veteran or a complete novice. For those new to the game, boules can be provided on the day. So make a note of the dates, and if you are free, come along to our venue next door to Stopsley High School in St. Thomas's Road, Stopsley: Saturday 16th May Saturday 20th June Saturday 18th July Saturday 15th August Saturday 19th September We are holding two open ‘come and try it’ days on Saturday 2nd May and Saturday 20th June at 2.00pm These are free and all equipment supplied. Anyone interested is welcome to join us. Thirty nine players from around our region and beyond turned out for our annual snowboule competition on Sunday 28th December. This included a number of first time players and two very welcome visitors in Chris Peel and Chris Cunningham. A seeded draw melee ensured that at least one experienced player was in every team to help and encourage the first timers and this proved very successful.
After 5 rounds the winner was Geoff White who won 4 games with a points difference of plus 41, beating Rob Munday (4 wins plus 27) and Chrissie Brockett (4 wins plus 13). Congratulations to Geoff and thanks to all those who entered to helped to make the day as pleasant as usual. A cold but beautifully sunny day saw a record 42 entries for Luton Petanque Club's annual Christmas Snowboule competition on Saturday 28th December. This was the first time the event had been held at our new venue, and it was certainly more comfortable than some events at the old windswept terrain! Despite some very wet weather in the previous few days, the surface was in good condition. As usual, the format was a series of short, timed games, with plenty of time between to warm up and socialise in the bar. The melee format meant that players had different partners for each game, giving novices and more experienced players alike, a chance to meet and play with new people. The top three placings were: Winner - Adrian Emson 2nd - John Darley 3rd - Ollie Zimmerman This year, our Christmas "Snow Boule" event will be on Saturday 28th December. This is a fun event to help blow away the Christmas cobwebs. Five timed games starting at 10.00 for 10.30. The "melee" format means you have different partners for each game. There will be plenty of time between games for a warming drink. Even if you've never played before, this is always a friendly and enjoyable day. We can supply you with boules, and show you the ropes. £5 per player. Hot food available. Either contact us to enter, or just turn up on the day.
