Recently a charity collection tin for the local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society was stolen from the Play Football bar. To help make good the loss, we've decided to charge non members a £1 fee for our melees from now on. Please come along, and don't feel you have to keep your donation to just one pound!
Our August Monthly Melee is this Saturday, at 2.00 pm (please arrive in good time for a prompt start).

12 teams braved the wind and the rain in the annual Over 50’s tournament at Luton P.C. The format was three leagues of 4 with the top two and the bottom two teams in each league going through to a seeded knockout in the afternoon. The plate final was between Mike Turvey and Trevor Whittaker from the home club and Les Gardiner and Pete Taylor with the Luton lads running out 13-8 winners. The main competition was a match up between Alan and Chrissie Brocket (who beat last years champions Paolo Infantino and Dan Eastwell in the semis) and Danny Sims and Derek Northend. In a short game with high scoring ends, Alan and Chrissie won 13-8. Many thanks to the brave souls who put up with the awful weather. Three players from the Axe and Compass PC, Heath and Reach, were among the competitors at our July Monthly Melee. In all, a dozen people enjoyed three games of competitive but fun petanque on a sunny afternoon. Once again, we were delighted to welcome new members as well as more experienced players. The winner was Alan Roden, and we all agreed that it was purely coincidence that he was also the organiser! Saturday 18th July sees our next Monthly Melee. These fun competitions are held on the third Saturday afternoon of each month until September.
There are three rounds, with each player having a different partner for each game. Just turn up in good time for a 2pm start. Entry is free, and we should be finished by around 5pm.. To find out more, call Alan on 07976 778588 or Keir on 07826 949197. On Sunday 21st June, the club hosted the Three Shires League doubles competition. Luton Petanque Club was represented by three teams, Alan and Sheila Roden; Steve Deacon and Georgina; and Gary Fabian and Steve Lewis (their first competition). The competition was organised as a five round ‘snake’ with the top four going through to the semi-finals.
The line-up included some top regional and national players and there was almost a shock in the first round when Alan and Sheila lost 12-13 against two of the best players in the region. Steve and Georgie almost made the semi-finals but just lost out due to a defeat in the last round (to Alan and Sheila!). Gary and Steve gained some invaluable experience and some coaching from one of the region’s top players, after which they won their next match! The semi-finals and final were great and close games with the eventual winners being Sam Blakey and Reece Gould, both ex Chiltern juniors and now top national and international players. The organisers thanked Luton PC for our hospitality and a good time was had by all. Our first come and try day on Saturday 2nd May was a great success. The weather was dry but chilly, and there were fears that people would be discouraged from turning up. In the end, there was an encouraging turnout, and six people have expressed a firm interest in joining the club. We'll be running another come and try day on Saturday 20th June, at 2.00 pm, so please come along if you missed the first one. Once again, the event is free, and all equipment can be provided. Special thanks to Neil Dilley (pictured, squatting) who came along to help. Eight local teams contested the Three Shires Petanque League 3 - 2 - 1 competition at Luton Petanque Club on Sunday 3rd May. On a day ranging from warm sunshine to thunderstorms, teams of three competed in a mixture of triples, doubles and singles games. Triple Espresso (Sue Infantino, Paolo Infantino, Peter Taylor) were winners with 100 points. But less than ten points separated 2nd to 6th places. Luton PC was represented by Team Tim (Trevor Whittaker, Ian Clitheroe, Mike Turvey) who finished 3rd. Adrian Emson and Keir Gale of Luton PC also took part along with Myra Huntley. Playing as "Make Your Own Luck", they took 5th place. A big thank you also to Luton's Alan Roden, for smoothly running the event. Luton Petanque Club Monthly melees 2015 Third Saturday of each month: 16th May 20th June 18th July 15th August 19th September All are welcome to our 2015 Monthly Melees on the third Saturday of each month until September. · Aimed at newcomers to the sport as well as experienced players. · Three rounds of doubles, with a different team mate each game. · No prizes, just for fun, and free entry. · No need to enter in advance, just turn up on the day in good time for a 2.00 pm start. Venue: Luton Petanque Club, St. Thomas's Road, Stopsley, Luton LU2 7UX. Info: Call Keir on 07826 949197 or email [email protected] Despite mixed fortunes for our two teams in the Three Shires League, this week was a very good start to the season. On Monday The Plaiters travelled to Baldock to play The Outlaws. The result was a very satisfying 3 -2 win against one of the best teams in the first division. Tuesday saw our weekly lunchtime practice session, with an enjoyable hour or two in warm sunshine. On Thursday it was the turn of The Boaters to begin their division three campaign. They played at home against the Noah's Ark, one of the teams relegated last year from the second division. Despite losing 3 - 2 it was a very creditable performance, and just a smidgin more luck might have seen a 13 -12 defeat in one of the triples turned into a victory, and an overall win in the match. At the same time, several club players turned out for the weekly Thursday evening session, creating a good atmosphere at our home venue. Al in all, a very enjoyable week of both competitive and social boules. The fixture list has been published for this year's Pennant Midweek League. Luton will compete in Division 2, playing home games on Tuesday evenings. Our first match is away at the White Hart, Campton, on Tuesday 5th May, with our first home match on Wednesday 19th May against The Storm, from Cottered. The week of 11th May is set aside for cup matches.
The full fixture list can be found here. |
