Snow Boule at Luton Petanque Club 29.12.17
It was ‘Weather Nightmare’ for 35 stalwart Luton/Chiltern players as they faced an icy Piste on arrival for the usual Yuletide Competition at Play Football, St. Thomas’ Road. Everyone was expecting to shed Christmas ‘cobwebs’ as they faced up to a cold and very wet morning. We had 5 x 30 minute timed Triples games (and one Doubles) with a welcomed hot lunch after the third game. The Piste was at its very challenging; icy ‘cow pats’, shallow ponds of icy water to circumnavigate and when, in the early afternoon, the sun popped out, there were soggy ‘Christmas Pud’ stretches of saturated Piste to overcome…The wind whipped up and all of us dug deep, used all our play skills, found that Churchill Spirit to tame that fearsome Piste no matter what it threw at us!Cobwebs High lobs, low lobs, scuttling ground shots. The whole repertoire. It was a glorious sight of bobble hats, scarves, puffer jackets and the odd Elf or two…Prize giving was a fun affair. Warm and snug in the Clubhouse, banter flowed like the welcoming hot coffee. Winner was Denise Newland of the Bird in Hand Club with 4 wins and 1 tie, Second was Debbie Matthews from the Axe and Compass Club with 4 wins and a points difference of plus 30 and Third was Adrian Emson from Luton Petanque Club with 4 wins and a points difference of plus 14. It was the culmination of a great day at L.P.C. A total of £314 was raised for Club Funds. Cobwebs duly blown away, we made our jubilant way home, red cheeked and as happy as sandboys.
